Meet the Librarian

About Me

Welcome to Oxford’s Lib Guide. My name is Sara Oxford and I am a librarian living in Portland Oregon. I received my Associates from Portland Community College, graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Art History and History, and I was a distance student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I received my Masters in Library and Information Science.

Philosophy

After eight years of education, I have come to understand that there is no standard way of learning or experiencing leisure for any person, nor is there a standard medium from which to learn or receive entertainment from.  In addition, I believe that there is not a defined line between leisure and study, and more so, the blending of these two actually results in more effective absorption of information and knowledge. Lastly, I believe that information retrieval barriers, be it reading or hearing disabilities or ESL difficulties, should be treated with the same respect as any other inquiry in the library, because everyone has an equal right to retrieve or access information and material wherever they are. These variances make reference services and information literacy education challenging, and yet exciting as I get to engage and interact with the amazing members in my community.

I chose to use Lib guides instead of Bib guides (library guide vs. Book Guide), as a means of extending my appreciation for the varying forms of leisure and study. As a result, I seek to incorporate alternative forms of information, including audi-books, movies, music, games, and even blogs and online resources, in addition to books.
